Loopy, repetitive techno that has lately stretched into ambient and cinematic soundscapes while keeping a constant rhythm and groove underneath. Berlin has been the one constant — born near Cologne, raised between the city, New York, Italy and the Netherlands, and back again — though he arrived at electronic music through dubstep rather than techno. Production is kept deliberately clear of commercial pressure: a day job sits apart from the studio, so a session can run three or four hours as a jam with nothing riding on it. The tracks lean on a Eurorack modular; he runs the Rhythm Werk label, holds a residency for Room Trax, and has opened at RSO.
