Flugelhorn, trumpet and cornet at the centre of South African jazz for six decades. His first trumpet was financed by Trevor Huddleston, a British priest working in the townships; he played the Sophiatown scene with The Jazz Epistles, reached Britain with King Kong, and was exiled to the United States in 1961 as part of the anti-apartheid campaign, where Harry Belafonte took him in. Grazing In The Grass went to number one there, and in 1987 Bring Him Back Home became an anthem of the movement to free Nelson Mandela. Working from a mobile studio in Botswana he re-absorbed mbaqanga, a strain he kept using after returning home in the early nineties. Born in Witbank in 1939, died in Johannesburg in 2018.
